The 2025 system record

A system event with a local boundary

In May 2025, a disinfection-equipment problem at the Short Hills Well Station caused chlorine residual to fall below the required level. The station was removed from service, safeguards were added and it returned to service on May 19. The utility said there was no evidence of contamination and no boil action was needed.

The public notice identified parts of Millburn/Short Hills and Springfield as affected. It did not describe a system-wide boil advisory.

EPA’s current system record also lists recent monitoring-and-reporting entries marked non-health-based. Those records cover the full system and are not results from one town or faucet.

What is local to New Providence

Old mains have been part of the local work

The borough reported that New Jersey American Water replaced about 3,200 feet of South Street water main in a $3.2 million project. Some of the pipe dated to 1902.

The borough has also publicized utility inspections to identify service-line materials. Those local records matter because a system report cannot describe the plumbing path to every New Providence faucet.
